When a shuttlecraft from the USS Enterprise discovers a man who has been missing for decades, Captain Kirk and his crew become involved in a strange situation involving the man and his mysterious alien companion, an energy being that has sustained him. As they investigate on an isolated planet, the crew confronts questions about life, loneliness, and the unique bond between the man and his unusual caretaker, while trying to understand the nature of the alien presence and its connection to the stranger’s survival.
