Kirk, Spock, and the Enterprise crew investigate the disappearance of a Federation historian named John Gill on the planet Ekos, where a totalitarian regime modeled on Nazi Germany has taken control. The team encounters a society ruled by strict militarism and oppressive laws, enforcing rigid conformity and serving as a cautionary example of corrupted ideals. As they interact with the inhabitants and their authoritarian leader, the crew seeks to understand the cause of the turmoil and locate their missing observer.
